Note on Moloch

  • "Moloch" is a deity associated with the Ammonites (and Phoenicians). This deity is also known as "Molech" (1 Kings 11:7), "Milcom" (1 Kings 11:5) and often associated with "Baal" (Jeremiah 32:35).
  • Child sacrifices were offered to Moloch (Deuteronomy 12:31, Psalms 106:37, 38), and the Israelites were forbidden (Leviticus 20:2-5) from associating themselves with this pagan practice. Nevertheless, both the apostate Israelites from the kingdom of Judah, and in the 10-tribe kingdom passed their children through fire. (2 Kings 17:17, 18)
